Fine oversized 42mm steel IWC “Portuguese” Jubilee 125th Anniversary, Ref. IW5441 (aka: R5441), No. 277/1000, made in a limited series of 1000 examples in 1993 for the 125th anniversary of IWC. The watch comes with its original new unworn IWC croco leather strap, original buckle and box. Well, to be honest, I’m not a big fan of modern re-editions, re-issues and heritage based collections, however I have to say IWC did a great job with this particular watch, so clean, so timeless… large but very elegant and wearable.
In the 1930s, there was a high demand for a precise wristwatch, especially in Portugal, a country of many great seafarers and explorers. Thus, in 1939, the IWC Portugieser was developed – an oversized wristwatch with a case diameter of 42mm and a high-precision movement IWC Calibre 74. In 1993, to celebrate the company’s 125th anniversary, IWC introduced the Portugieser Ref. 5441, the exact reissue of the Portugieser from the 1939. Large 42mm case, silver-colored dial, Arabic hour numerals, leaf hands and a sunken sub-dial for seconds – a truly impressive look on the wrist. At the heart of this watch is the flat precision movement caliber 9828, which is an improved version of the legendary pocket watch movement caliber 74 from the 1940s.
C. Three-body, polished and brushed, rounded bezel, concave lugs, transparent snap-on case back, band engraved with “277/1000”. D. Silver with applied pink gold Arabic numerals and dots indexes, subsidiary guillochè dial for the seconds. Pink gold feuille hands. M. Cal. 9828, rhodium-plated, fausses cotes decoration, 19 jewels, monometallic balance, straight line lever escapement, Breguet balance spring, adjusted to five positions, shock absorber, swan-neck regulator. Dial, case, and movement signed. Dim. 42 mm.
