Unicorn rare prototype of BUREN Cal. 82, a groundbreaking automatic chronometer movement equipped with high-beat 36,000 A/h frequency of the balance wheel and two barrels with a constant spring force. Developed in late 1960s calibre 82 was intended to compete with high-beat mechanical swiss movements, but after meticulous chronometric testings, it established itself also as the most serious competitor of electronic watches with audio-frequency oscillators. This result is unique in a mechanical wristwatch movement that can be comfortably worn.
In the middle on 1960s Buren was one of the chief innovators in automatic watches, developing and patenting the micro-rotor concept, pioneer of first automatic chronograph movement and of course this groundbreaking calibre 82. In late 1960s, Hamilton acquired the Buren Watch Company, all the factories and technologies Buren had developed up to that point, incuding of course 250 movements Cal. 82, the have produced. In 1971, the Buren brand was returned to Swiss ownership. By 1972, the Buren-Hamilton partnership was dissolved, and the factory liquidated, due to decreased interest and sales of the Hamilton-Buren product.
In 1998 ‘Schweizer Uhren-Editionen’ acquired the Buren name and all assets, including 239 miraculously survived Cal. 82 movenents. The same year all 239 movements were cased and issued as a limited edition “Buren Calibre 82” watch.
