Very rare 32mm 18K White Gold AUDEMARS PIGUET “Disco Volante”, Ref. 5143, manual Cal. AP 2003, made in early 1960s. Original advertising from 1962 presented this watch as “Ultra-thin” model with quite high $920 price tag (for example the price of automatic Patek Philippe Calatrava Ref. 3439 was only $750 back then). Very good original condition with normal wear from age and use, comes with its original 18k WG buckle, made by JP.
The term “Disco Volante” refers to the design of the watch case. Disco Volante means flying saucer in Italian, adopted by the Italian watch collectors’ community, applied to a style of watch released in the early 1960s by Audemars Piguet in the ref. 5093 and Patek Philippe in the ref. 2552. These are each exemplified by relatively large flat cases, wide bezels, sunken crowns and short, sometimes hidden, lugs.
